As the industry changes, so must we.

UPDATED May 9, 2014 – The Tile Roofing Institute (TRI) has created a May series of 2 hour presentations to ensure contractors and others in the tile roofing industry are aware of the changes between the existing 4th Edition and new 5th Edition. Technical Services Representatives Manny Oyola (Eagle Roofing Products), Adrian Cooper (Boral Roofing Products) and Paul Oleksak (Hanson Roof Tile) have been working hard to refine a short program to introduce the new manual. One of the most talked about changes is a shift from the 4th Edition System 1, 2, 3, 4 classifications to an Underlayment and Flashing Matrix on page 3.

TRI President Rick Olson thinks other changes are not significant. “In an effort to better reflect the actual wind forces, the code derived maps have now moved from a Nominal Wind Speed to an Ultimate Design Wind Speed designation” Olson said. “But don’t worry, they are only slightly different from the current requirements in the 4th edition, just reflective of the new language and in almost all cases will not change the fastening requirements you are already using. New name, same old uplift resistance in the end.”

In addition to events in Fort Myers, Sarasota, Lakeland, and West Palm Beach, the FRSA will host the TRI presentation on May 16th at their new Orlando Training Center. FRSA Executive Director Lisa Pate says “I am excited to be moving forward with this training.” TRI and FRSA have been working together for nearly two decades on the development of installation manuals that represent proper installation practices

If you are in the TRI database as a Certified High Wind Installer (check the list here) you can register online to renew your certification for $99. At the event you will receive a copy of the new 5th Edition manual and after passing a 15 question test will be listed on the Contractor Search. For those who have never attended a Certified Installer High Wind class you can register to attend for $15 and you will receive a new 5th Edition manual at the event. Full day High Wind Installer Certification classes will be held June 19th to 25th. Locations will be added to the training schedule soon.
