In support of our efforts to tackle the pervasive insurance fraud issues currently under the microscope in Florida, the TRIA will soon release a Post Storm Event Technical Bulletin with repair and replace guidelines. Created in an infographic format, the guide is intended to provoke dialogue between roofing contractors, adjusters, homeowners, and insurance agents about the viability of repairing, instead of replacing a tile roof damaged by hail, or wind.

The TRIA’s new guidelines mirror the requirements Florida recently passed into law known as Bill 2-D. The new law modifies this so that if a roof is more than 25% damaged but complies with the state’s 2007 building code, it only needs to be repaired. “It did ease that threshold requirement, which is going to make it more difficult to obtain a full roof replacement,” said Trent Cotney, a partner at Adams and Reese.

It is important to note that these guidelines transcend Florida and other high-wind markets and will be applicable in areas susceptible to roof damage caused by hail, tornados and earthquakes.
